The first ever Sudanese-born Australian Rules footballer, 25-year-old Majak Daw migrated to Australia with his parents and eight brothers and sisters in 2003 as refugees fleeing civil war in their native Sudan. While attending secondary school at MacKillop College Werribee in Melbourne’s West, Majak came to discover a natural instinct for one of his adopted country’s most cherished pastimes, Aussie Rules Football. Majak’s towering 195cm frame, fierce ability in the contest and versatility as a competent forward and ruckman caught the eye of North Melbourne recruiters who promptly drafted him to the Kangaroos in 2009, making AFL history in the process. In 2016 Majak Daw was awarded the AFL Mark-Of-The-Year for a mighty Round 18 hanger against Collingwood and owing to an impressive season all-round signed a three year contract extension at North. Majak is actively involved with youth and community football workshops at the Western Jets where he first cut his teeth as a footballer prior to AFL stardom.
